Understanding Men’s Brows

If you’ve ever had a male client sit in your chair, you know the look - slightly nervous, saying things like “I don’t want them to look too perfect, okay?”.

That’s because when it comes to men’s brows, less is more. Most guys just want to bring back the fullness they used to have or make their brows look a little more even - without anyone noticing they had them tinted.

As @browsbyleo says it perfectly:

“Men often inquire about how to make their brows appear more dense in areas they feel they once looked darker, fuller & more defined. This is a great example of how we can achieve that without changing shape or size — so they still feel like their brows look like THEIR brows. Less is more.”

That’s the mindset you need when working with male clients. Forget the sharp outlines and crisp ombré fades - think natural texture, soft definition, and small tweaks that make a big difference. You’re not changing their look; you’re just bringing out what’s already there.

Brow Treatments for men

The truth is, men’s brows can benefit from almost every treatment we already love, it’s just about adjusting the technique and intensity! Here are some of the best options to keep in mind when working with male clients:

  • Trimming & Waxing: Great for cleaning up overgrown or messy brows while keeping their natural shape.
  • Brow Lamination ↗: Ideal for men with unruly or downward-growing hairs. It helps lift, control, and give a clean, brushed-up look.
  • Tinting: A quick fix for adding subtle color and depth. That’s where Liquid Dye ↗ comes in!
  • PMU (Permanent Makeup): Perfect for men with sparse areas or gaps. When done softly, it blends seamlessly with natural hair for long-lasting results.

Each client is different! Some might just need a trim, others love the polished result of a full Brow Lamination and Liquid Dye combo ↗. Let's go over the step-by-step to color men's brows!

How to Color Men’s Brows (Step by Step)

Goal: enhance density and balance while keeping the natural, masculine character of the brows. Adjust your usual routine, men’s brows are typically coarser, denser, and grow more erratically.

1. Consult & Diagnose

  • Ask for their desired look: clean & defined vs natural & slightly messy.
  • Identify sparse spots, asymmetry, downward growth, or overgrown bulk.
  • Patch test when appropriate.

2. Cleanse & Prep

  • Thoroughly degrease the area using Pro Cleanser ↗.
  • Dry completely. Optional: a light exfoliating wipe to promote even staining.

Pro Tip: Prefer cleaning the brow area using Pro Cleanser instead of Foam Cleanser. The Pro Cleanser contains alcohol and men often produce more oil. This way you make sure you have a clean sheet before you start!

Shape First: Trim + Wax/Thread

  • Remove excess bulk and stray hairs; preserve the natural line.
  • Keep fronts soft; avoid carving sharp edges unless requested.

Shade Choice & Mix (Liquid Dye)

  • Choose softer tones for a natural effect: Light Brown or Medium Brown for most; deepen only if hair is very dark.
  • Mix 2 drops Liquid Dye : 1 drop Cream Oxydant ↗ to a smooth, creamy consistency

Apply in thin layers.

  • Coarse hairs absorb faster. Start with 2–5 minutes for a subtle result.
  • For a gentle gradient: tail 4–6 min, middle 3–4 min, front 1–2 min.
  • Check every minute; remove earlier rather than later if in doubt.

Finish & Aftercare

  • Offer them Elixir Nr.3 ↗ to keep the brow hairs moisturized and nourished.
  • Aftercare: avoid water, steam, and skincare on the area for 24 hours. No gym boys!
  • Maintenance: re-tint every 4–6 weeks or as needed.

Optional - Beard Tinting

Yes, you can also fill some sparse beard areas! (Fun fact, my dad loves when I bring Liquid Dye home and dye his beard! He looks much younger!)

  • Clean the brows using Pro Cleanser ↗.
  • Use the same shade as brows.
  • Apply lightly to patchy or lighter areas, 2–4 minutes max.
  • Make sure you blend it well.

Pro Tips

  • Start lighter; you can always layer or extend time.
  • Keep the inner brow soft to avoid an artificial “block.” Unless they want a very defined brow look.
  • If brows are unruly, consider Brow lamination + Liquid Dye for controlled, natural fullness.
  • Focus on creating a balanced, strong, and well-structured brow shape - one that complements the natural facial anatomy rather than emphasizing sharpness or overly defined lines.

Mixing for Men’s Brows

When you’re working on masculine brows, color choice is where subtle turns into confident. A blend that’s perfect on a bold, high-contrast brow can read too heavy on a client who wants “just a little more fullness.”

That’s why we recommend mixing with intention and building depth with time - not with extra pigment!

“On a men’s brow, this is how I’d use the blend—2/3 Dark Brown + 1/3 Black. The result sits right between our younger model and the client with very bold brows. With masculine brows, thoughtful color blending is everything—go too deep and it can feel intimidating for clients who want a subtler look.”

Start one step lighter than the hair color and fine-tune from there. If your base reads a touch too deep, soften it with a hint of Blonde; if it pulls warm on the skin, cool it down with Ash Grey.

Because men’s hairs are typically coarser, keep the timing—2–5 minutes that usually delivers that natural finish. Remember, you can always add a minute; you can’t take one back!
