What to do if brows turn out too dark? Pro Tips with Gabriela Chrobak

1. Why Brows Turn Out Darker Than Expected
According to Gabriela, preventing dark brows starts with understanding why rapid pigment absorption happens in the first place. The most common causes include:
-
Over-processing time: Leaving the tint, liquid dye, or henna on for even 60 seconds too long.
-
Incorrect shade selection: Choosing a shade with undertones that are too deep or excessively cool for the client’s natural skin tone and hair depth.
-
Improper skin prep: Failing to hydrate dry skin prior to application, which causes uneven, thirsty patches to swallow up pigment aggressively.
-
The post-lamination trait: Applying tint or hybrid dye immediately after a brow lamination service without cutting your development time in half! Lamination opens up the hair cuticles, making them highly porous so they drink up color instantly.
Signs of Fast Pigment Absorbers:
Before applying any product, analyze your client’s brow area. You are dealing with a fast-absorbing brow if you notice:
-
Severely dry or dehydrated skin with visible flaking or dry patches.
-
High hair porosity (common in fine, fair, or chemically processed hair).
-
Thin skin with open pores, which swallows skin stains rapidly.
-
Freshly laminated brows, where the hair structure is completely open and receptive to color.

2. Color Corrector vs. Natural Fading: Knowing When to Act
When a brow turns out too dark, you need to assess whether to fix it immediately in the chair or advise the client to let it soften naturally. Here is Gabriela’s golden rule:
Use a Color Corrector or Cleanser Immediately When:
-
The skin stain is too blocky or harsh: If the skin stain right after wiping off the product looks way too intense, blocky at the front, or excessively cool, act immediately!
-
The quick fix: Apply a gentle Color Corrector↗ or a mild physical scrub on a cotton swab right at your station. Work in soft, circular motions over the front of the brows or dark edges to break up the surface skin stain before the client leaves your salon.
Let It Fade Naturally When:
-
The hair absorbed the pigment, but the skin is fine: If the brow hair shaft itself took on a rich shade but the surrounding skin stain is balanced, do not flood the hair with heavy chemical removers!
-
The explanation: Chemical tints and hybrid dyes naturally fade from the skin within a few days and soften on the hair over a couple of weeks. Applying extra harsh chemicals to already dark hair can cause unnecessary dryness or damage. Gentle daily home care will soften the tone within 24-48 hours naturally.
3. How to Handle "They Are Way Too Dark!" Feedback
When a client sits up, looks in the mirror, and gasps, "They are way too dark!", your response dictates the rest of their salon experience.
Gabriela’s #1 advice for Brow Artists:
“Don’t panic! Remind the artist that fresh tint/henna always looks the most intense on day one due to the skin stain and surface residue. Advise them to calmly explain to the client that the skin stain will naturally lighten after 2–3 face washes, softening the overall look significantly within 24–48 hours.“
4. The First 30 Seconds: Script for Building Instant Client Trust
How you handle the first 30 seconds after a client expresses concern can turn a potential negative review into a loyal, trusting relationship. Use this exact script recommended by Gabriela to put your client at ease:
"I completely understand why it feels a bit intense right now, freshly styled brows can definitely be a surprise at first glance! Please don’t worry, the stain on the skin is always at its absolute strongest today. Once you wash your face tonight and tomorrow, that skin stain will naturally soften by 30% to 40%, leaving behind a gorgeous, soft, and natural shade. Let’s give it a day or two to settle in, and I promise you’re going to love them!"
By validating their feelings immediately and explaining the science behind skin fading, you transform their anxiety into confidence.
