PMU brows cover

How to cover faded PMU with Brow Tint?

written byŽaneta Mlčáková

Have you ever had a client with faded PMU asking for a quick retouch? It’s more common than you think! PMU techniques like powder brows, microblading, or nano brows create long-lasting results, but over time, the pigment naturally fades or shifts in tone. That’s when many Brow Artists turn to Brow Henna or Liquid Dye to refresh the color. Let’s go over how you can use both to beautifully cover faded PMU brows!

Why does PMU fade over time?

Even though PMU (Permanent Makeup) is designed to last, it doesn’t stay perfect forever. Over time, the pigment in the skin naturally breaks down due to factors like sun exposure, skin cell turnover, and skincare products containing acids or retinol.

As a result, PMU brows start to fade or shift in tone - sometimes turning ashy, green, reddish, or grey depending on the pigment used and the client’s skin type. The shape can remain, but the color often loses its intensity and definition, making brows look dull or uneven. Sadly that is something that happens.

But don't worry - you can be a hero and save the day!

"Enhancing your brows is more than a routine appointment, it is a personalized transformation that reflects your individuality, complements your unique features, and aligns with your personal style and energy." Chloe from @centerfold_pmu

When does PMU need a retouch?

Most PMU treatments - like microblading, powder brows, or nano brows - stay fresh for about 1 to 3 years, depending on the client’s skin type, lifestyle, and of course - aftercare.

You’ll notice it’s time for a touch-up when the brows start to fade unevenly, lose shape definition, or the color shifts too warm or cool. Some clients may only need a small color refresh, while others require a full re-pigmentation.

Between these touch-ups, you can easily maintain the color and symmetry with Brow Henna ↗ or Liquid Dye ↗.

Covering faded PMU with Brow Henna

When it comes to refreshing faded PMU, Brow Henna ↗ is one of the easiest and most natural ways to bring brows back to life! This Brow Tint stains both the skin and hair, creating rich, even color and helping balance out old pigment tones. It’s the perfect solution for covering faded PMU brows.

Why Brow Henna works so well on PMU:

  • Adds vibrant color - Enhances faded pigment and gives brows a deeper, more even tone. Some clients love when their brows are slightly darker and vibrant!
  • Long-lasting results - Stains the skin for up to 7 days and brow hairs for up to 6 weeks.
  • Covers pigment - Blends beautifully with healed PMU without altering or damaging the skin.

Meet Chloe, our Master Trainer based in Arizona, a true PMU expert and brow transformation artist. She’s known for her signature work combining Permanent Makeup and Henna, helping clients maintain their perfect brows between touch-ups. See for yourself a video where she shares the results!

“Faded brow tattoo? Refresh your look instantly with #HennaBrows! Our natural tint gives your brows a vibrant color boost — perfect for temporarily enhancing previous tattooing while you wait for your next touch-up.” Chloe

Preserve PMU color with Brow Henna

Applying Brow Henna ↗ over healed powder brows helps maintain color vibrancy and an even tone.

“Applying henna over your powder brows helps preserve your color and maintain a beautiful, even tint—no need for frequent permanent makeup sessions. Remember: Permanent makeup should only need a touch-up every 1–3 years, but henna can help keep your brows fresh and flawless in between! 🌿✨” - Chloe

Using this method, you can offer clients a low-commitment maintenance service that keeps their brows balanced, vibrant, and camera-ready - all while respecting the integrity of the PMU pigment underneath. Discover the best Brow Henna Kit with 6 colors ↗ and offer your clients the best treatment!

Tip: Henna brows are very similar to powder brows. You can offer henna to clients who want to get PMU brows but aren’t ready to commit yet - whether that’s emotionally or financially.

If your clients love their PMU results but don’t want to invest in a full touch-up session just yet, brow tint or henna can be the perfect in-between solution. It keeps brows looking fresh and even, without breaking the bank for a big treatment right away.

Covering faded PMU with Liquid Dye

When your client’s PMU has started to fade but the base shape is still visible, Liquid Dye ↗ is your go-to tool for bringing balance and definition back - fast. With its strong pigmentation and Keratin-infused formula, Liquid Dye not only revives color but also nourishes brow hairs, leaving them healthier and glossier after every treatment!

Why Liquid Dye works so well on PMU

  • Corrects and balances tones – Mix and customize shades to neutralize unwanted warmth or add vibrancy to ashy pigments. Use Ash Grey to cool down tones or Warm Brown to bring warmth back to overly faded brows.
  • Nourishes the hairs – The Keratin formula strengthens and protects brow hairs, helping them look fuller and healthier over time. This treatment allows the brows to enjoy some much-needed nourishment and care after PMU.
  • Long-lasting results – Stains the skin for up to 11 days and the hairs for up to 6 weeks, keeping brows bold and defined between PMU touch-ups.

Pro Tips from Alexandra

Meet Alexandra (@xelabrows), our Master Trainer based in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the queen of Liquid Dye transformations. Known as Arizona’s natural brow specialist, she teaches artists how to perfect tone correction and precise application — especially when working over healed PMU.

As she explains in the Mixing Liquid Dye Course ↗, control and layering are everything:

“Apply in thin layers and stamp the color for clean lines and an even stain. Mix tones to neutralize undertones - use Ash Grey ↗ to cool down warmth or Warm Brown ↗ to bring life back to overly ashy brows.”

With this technique, brow professionals can fix uneven tones, nourish the hairs, and create a balanced, vibrant finish that enhances the PMU base instead of covering it completely.
